Some insider knowledge, it rhymes with "the cat". As lead designer, I worked with Zagat for years before and after their aquisition by Google. Zagat Guides were the Yelp of the pre-digital age and arrived at their ratings simply by surveying regular restaraunt goers like you and me as opposed to food critics or industry professionals. Postcards, e-cards, printed banners, posters and POP pieces created on brand were the tools of the trade used to get the public to vote on the restaurants, bars and shops that they frequent or even avoid. Other essential parts of Zagat's business were trade sales, B2B options and custom event books.
